An air conditioning system is a fairly common appliance in most homes in the U.S. Several factors are responsible for this including the fact that with the global warming, summers are getting hotter than they were before. This has made the need for an air conditioning system a necessity. When planning for your air conditioning system, whether it is a brand new installation or you are replacing an old system, there are certain factors you would need to take into consideration to help you in budgeting for the cost.

Air conditioning systems come in different forms and the type of system would play a role in determining the cost. First of all, different manufacturers include diverse specifications in the systems they produce, leading to a variation in costs. Apart from that, you would need to decide whether you are going for a portable system, a system that is limited to just a specific room or a central air conditioning system. Each of these has different costs and different advantages.

Most people go for the central air conditioning system. If you plan to install a central air conditioning system, the type of house you want to install it in would matter a lot. You need to find out if your house is already fitted for an air conditioning system or if it is going to need retrofitting in order for the system to fit. Installing an air conditioning system into an already fitted house would cost significantly less than one which needs retrofitting. On the other hand, a ductless system can be installed. However, this can prove to be more expensive in the long run as it is not common to find parts in the U.S

Once you have decided on the type and the manufacturer, another consideration in determining air conditioning systems cost would be the energy efficiency. The U.S department of Energy (DOE) came up with a way to measure the energy efficiency in cooling systems; this is called the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) and is usually located on a yellow label on each unit. The minimum SEER number was set as 10 although it is possible to get systems with SEER 14. The higher the energy efficiency, the more costly the system to purchase however, the costs are often offset over time by the energy savings. Before you go for a higher SEER system though, it is important to know how long you intend to use the system. If for instance, it is for a house you intend to live in for a long time, then you are likely to make up the purchasing cost in energy savings. If on the other hand, you intend to dispose of the house before long, a lower SEER number might be beneficial.

The size of the system is also worth considering. When it comes to air conditioning systems costs, size refers to the cooling capacity of the system, which is measured in British Thermal Unit (BTU). The capacity of the system should match the size of the cooling area. The capacity should not be substantially smaller than the area of you will end up spending more in energy consumption without getting the full benefit of the air conditioning system. If the system is too big for the area, this can also be a problem. The key is to find balance.

Air conditioning systems cost is influenced by the fact that this is not a DIY project; you need professionals to take care of the installation. The charges will vary according to the professional therefore in order to get a good idea of air conditioning systems cost, ask for several bids and do a comparison.
