Beginners guide to Sea fishing tackle

If you are looking to start sea fishing and want to invest in some quality sea fishing tackle, there are a few essential bits of kit that you don't want to leave off your list.

Fishing Reel

For a good all round type of reel go for a mid-sized, fixed spool reel which will cope with everything from heavy lures to pier fishing, harbour fishing and even beach fishing. If you are new to casting, you will find this type of spool much easier to cast from than a multiplier, so it's a great type to get you started. Most sea fishing tackle shops will be able to provide this type of reel for around £40 and if you take care of it, it should last you many years.

Fishing Rod

Your fishing rod should be flexible with a smooth, gradual curve from tip to butt. Look for a nice, soft through action which will forgive you casting mistakes and fighting fish. Most beginners start off with a 10 - 12 foot rod, as shorter rods will not cope with pier fishing and longer ones are far too ungainly for beginners.

When you are choosing a rod you will need to have a think about where and how you will primarily be fishing. If you intend to mainly fish off the pier or in an estuary, then a light casting weight of around 1 - 3 ounces is sufficient. If you need to cast further then you will have to look to a moderate (3 - 6 ounces) or heavy (4 - 8 oz) casting weight.

Fishing line

Good old fashioned mono filament lines are still the best in the market, despite claims that some of the newer technologies can outperform them. Mono filament tends to be much cheaper than braided and will forgive your mistakes as a beginner far better than high tech alternatives.

Rigs, weights and other gear

Before you start out, you will need to decide where you are going to fish from and what species of fish you will be aiming to catch. Once you know all this, take some advice from your local Sea fishing tackle shop as to what other gear you need.
