People search for explanations to the unknown. Those that need tangible reasons for events that occur which are, at times, beyond the control of any man. Among these death is but one of the greatest mysteries that has haunted the curiosity of every consciousness.

If there is one thing that remained unchanging in man’s history it is that of death. There are those who believe in spirits as much as those who believe in life after it. But for something which is inevitable, as every man has to face his own end, this has become an issue that has associated itself with fear. Yes, fear—fear of the pain, fear of death—as it faces the unknown.

What happens after a person dies is still being questioned. For the religious, death is the occurrence when the soul leaves the body and begins an everlasting life. Other sectors also, especially the Hindi, defined this as the end of one lifetime and where the spirit can be reincarnated depending on how he lived his former life. The belief on and other spiritual entity is usually thought of with the issue of dying. One in particular is heaven, hell and purgatory as taught in the Christian doctrines. Whether these are places or states are even being questioned—and worried about.

For the dying, there is this apprehension about his life here on earth: if he has made peace with his enemies and himself, accomplished his duties, and has even said goodbye to his loved ones. In addition is the question as to where the spirit ends up. Does he deserve to be in heaven? Suffer in hell? Or how long do they have to stay in purgatory? Or is his soul going to live through after it has left the body? People wander upon the uncertainty of what will happen after giving their last breath. It leads them to look back at their actions and if ever they had made an impact that would mean living out their purpose.

Of all the fears a dying person may feel it is that of dying alone. Abandonment, even with the living, is hard to deal with. To be left alone during the final hours is the harshest of all pains. Comfort should be given to those who are about to give their last breaths. To hold their hand, pray for them, even few words of gratitude are already a great deal to hold dearly. Before dying the body suffers immense pain that the only cure is death. But to feel all alone is more than death.

There have been numerous definitions of dying and of death. Myths and legends have even explained this through personification like the “Grim Reaper”, pictured as a hooded man with a large slash which he uses to separate the soul from the body and later on collect it. They are stories that have been retold time and again so as to give people a tangible belief of what happens after death.

There may be some who have accepted the fate of dying, taking into their lives the beliefs they carry. However, some people search continuously the courage which they need to face this inevitable fate that all mortals are to go through. Life on earth is but temporary. It is up to us to make the most out of it.
