Massage oils have many variations; some are oilier in its finishing compared to others, and some need blending with other essential oils to bring out the full benefits of the oil. In addition, some have a shorter lifespan, which makes them go rancid more easily so it's important to use it as soon as possible before it expires. Aromatherapy and treatment with massage oils are now in use by many cultural practices such as the Indian Ayurvedic treatments and holistic treatments in western culture.
There are many types of processes used in the extraction of oils from the various products and among one of the most popular is distillation. In this process, water or steam is used to extract the oil and after evaporation of the liquid, only the oil is left behind which is then sent for purification. The quantity of oil produced is minimal as compared to the product, for example, a 100-kg of jasmine flowers will only produce in average less than 400ml of pure jasmine oil. Other less used processes for extraction include hydro diffusion, expression and solvent extraction.
Some of the more popular essential oils applied neat or as a blend include lavender, lemon grass, ylang-ylang and jojoba oil. Each essential oil imparts different properties within a massage oil – the right blend can result in giving the recipient of a massage a relaxed feel. Essential oils can also soothe the skin, release tension from the muscles, and leave an overall feeling of stress release. The aroma of the massage oils is in itself part of the therapy. However, before using any products on your skin, it is always best to test if you have any allergic reactions to the oil as some people do have sensitive skin.
