A thesis or dissertation is by way of definition a “document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings”, and comprises several formal elements all of which have to be precisely laid out and formulated as per the instructions for the relevant teaching and/or education establishment. Typically a thesis or dissertation (different terms but the translation is the same) is required to have a title page followed by an abstract (more later) the body of the work which contains the introduction, literature review and findings of the research carried out, and of course a reference section.

The reference section is essential because it shows the person who is assessing the paper where the research was made and what relevance it has to the subject or topic and if indeed it is the latest available documented research data. Any thesis presented should contain a statement, that is to say a short one sentence or two sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow in the body of the work. This statement should test the ideas of the body of the work and also better organize and develop your argument to provide your reader with a “guide” to your argument.

The abstract element of a paper or dissertation is essential in acting as a brief summary of a research article which precedes the following in-depth analysis and/or argument of a particular subject or discipline. It is a guide and is used in such a way as to guide and help the reader quickly ascertain the paper's purpose, the topic or subject and where the paper is heading. Occasionally the terms “synopsis” or “précis” is used in much the same way and translates to pretty much the same as abstract.

Getting the presentation of a paper for just such a submission, or indeed presenting the fruits of your labours, endeavours and research is equally as important as the content itself, and students can and frequently are marked down for poor presentation or not adhering strictly to the presentation parameters.

A dissertation fits into the framework of higher education and university education by showing the relevant people that your skills for rational argument and your skills for research and subsequent translation of the results are adequate for the role one may be called upon to play in any future career or employment.
