Are you are bird watcher who has got fed up of the same types of birds turning up in your backyard to feast on your artificial wild bird food like niger seed and dried mealworms? While for the many birds who depend on backyard food left by feeders like you, it may not meet the requirement of all birds you would like to see.
Basically all birds need water, shelter and different food requirements. Best is to observe the birds in their natural habitat. To get specific birds to your backyard you need to make available food that specific type of bird prefers. This may include worms, insects. Flower nectar, fruit, berries, tree sap, nuts, seeds, buds of trees and bushes, some even fish, small animals, eggs and yes even other birds.
So how do you find out what different types of birds prefer? The first sign is the birds beak. Birds who eat seeds have a cone shaped thick beak – this is ideal for cracking seeds. These birds eat insects when they cannot find seeds. Birds who fall into this category are sparrows, cardinals, finches, towhees, finches, etc.
A birds dies is only determined by various other factors like their flight pattern, hearing and sight. Eagles and Hawks are great example for birds who rely on their eyesight for food – they can easily spot a possible prey from a distance. Owls who usually feast at night are not able to see much in the dark. Hearing is what assists them to detect rodents. Swallows are great examples for birds who eat while they fly. They prey on little flying insects who come their way while they are flying. What about robins who feast on earthworms taken out from way below the soil? They use both their hearing and sight to capture the tiniest movements and noises to pull out the earthworm when it comes near arms reach.
Birds are not choosy like many human beings. Depending on the season and the availability of food, they naturally adapt to the environment. When fruits are in plentiful and ripe birds feast on them. When they run out of fruits they feast on insects, etc. Winter is a time you can easily tame birds as food is difficult to find beneath all the snow. Many birds depend and return to feeders more frequently than during the normal season.
While you have a supply of food and water ever ready in the garden you will not only be able to see a variety of birds returning to feast, but you will also be helping the birds in a little way to find sufficient food to survive.
