Are you searching for the perfect way to give you outdated kitchen a modern upgrade? Consider adding a kitchen backsplash to spice up your kitchen. A backsplash will brighten up the room and it is a fairly easy project. A tile backsplash is one of the simplest projects to add to your stunning kitchen. Below are the steps to assist you with installing a new tile kitchen backsplash.

First, it is vital to plan out your project carefully. To rough up the area for preparation you can simply sand the area to make it ready for installation, providing it is only drywall. However, if you already have a backsplash, then you will need to take the old one off before installing the new. To do this, you will have to cut the backer that already exists, which means both the drywall and the old tiles. Then of course, you will need to install a new backboard which can be done by placing it on top of the existing studs. Drywall will work fine or you can use a cement backer board.

Next, you need to figure out the exact length of the backsplash, as well as the width to determine how many tiles that you will need to purchase. Then, you can plan out what size of tiles you want to use, as well as the pattern you are planning on constructing. It is important to purchase glazed tiles so that they will not become stained from grease and moisture. Also, when you figure your measurements, it is a good idea to add about ten percent extra in order to account for waste and mistakes.

Let's move on to the installation of the kitchen backsplash. First, you need to remove anything that is will likely get in your way, including the hood of the stove or range. Next, very importantly, turn off the power that is to any switches or outlets and remove any outlet covers. After this is completed, you are ready to install the backer board. To do this, make sure you use galvanized screws, which work best for this type of project. It is important that you leave a gap about an eighth of an inch between all of the edges, and then use your mesh tape to cover it up as well as the filler compound.

Next, the area where the range will be, as well as any other gaps that the tile will be running over should be supported by a temporary ledger board which keeps them in the proper place while you complete the installation. Now you are ready to lay out your design. Use the counter or floor to lay out all of the tiles in the pattern you choose. Mark your center point, and begin applying the tile adhesive to the bottom center. Then, you will place the edge of the tile on the line, making certain that you leave 1/8" underneath which will be caulked later on. Continue to install the rest of the tiles the same as the first, making sure you are working away from the center. This is a time consuming process; you need to be certain to wiggle each one correctly into place and place a spacer in between each one.

As you come to spots in your work where you need to cut the tiles, stop and do it immediately. Never leave a space and then come back; this could cause problems with the rest of your job. Make sure you use your scoring cutter to cut the tile. If you do not have one, consider renting one per day, as they are very affordable. Do not forget to cut spaces for electrical outlets that will be in the kitchen backsplash.

Now when you have completed the installation of your tiles, it is time to grout them. Be sure that you have allowed several hours, usually overnight for the tile adhesive to completely dry. If you use a grout that is sand less, you will not scratch the tile of your new surface. Also, be certain that you use a rubber float and push the grout down well into the gaps between your tiles. To remove the excess, you need to hold the float at an angle of 45 degrees. After you have finished the grout application, allow it to set for at least an hour. Then, with a wet sponge, wipe off the surface to rinse clean. To finish up, buff the tiles so that they will shine. Your perfect kitchen backsplash installation project is now completed.
