Make a list. The first thing you should always do before you go shopping (whether online or offline) is come up with a list of the things you need or want to purchase. This is important because without a list, you are more likely to waste both your time and money. Time, because if there are a lot of items you need to buy, it will definitely take you longer to think and subsequently purchase them all. Money, because without a list, you will surely find yourself purchasing an item or two that is or are not that necessary or do not need to be bought right away. On that note, you should likewise set a limit as to how much you are willing or are capable of spending to avoid making a mess of your finances.

Compare. When shopping for an item, there is no greater folly than purchasing it at the first store you see. What most people who want to save do is this: they visit a number of stores where the item is carried and ask for the price. After doing so, they compare prices and go back to the shop where the item is cheapest. It will do you good to do the same even when looking to buy via the Internet. Remember that the price of merchandise sold online is often not monitored or controlled by any regulating body; as such, there is always the risk of being led to purchase something at an outrageous price. To avoid this, visit a number of sites offering the merchandise you are interested in and take note of the amount and other costs - such as shipping or delivery charges - you have to shoulder. Then, compare. Only after doing so should you go ahead and make your purchase.

Use coupons. Gone are the days when people think of coupons as pieces of paper cut out and used when making purchases at the supermarket. Today, discount coupons are also found online, and can be used when shopping for a wide variety of goods - from beauty products and clothes, to sports equipment, and almost everything else available for purchase on the World Wide Web. If you want to save, then you should make it a habit to search first for coupons for the items you want before you purchase them. Just make sure that the coupons you find are valid.

Take note of sales and other promotions. One of the best ways to save money while indulging in a bit of retail therapy is to go shopping when there are ongoing promotions. Of course, before you can do this, you have to keep yourself informed about the developments in the places or websites where you love to shop or which you know are reliable when it comes to the price and quality of their wares. You can do this by regularly visiting these online stores and by joining their mailing list (if this option is available).
