Looking back, women were the only ones who were concerned with their skin car. But the times have changed. Not only are men starting to care for their skin but also products designed with men in mind are starting to saturate the market.

How did it came to be that men were portrayed as tough. Maybe because it was against the rules of machismo to show tenderness. Tenderness would mean caring and men are not supposed to care. What a big misconception that is.

It is a fact that men are known to be tougher than women. However, thinking that tough meant not having to take a bath is a false misconception. If youre tough you can bear the discomfort and itchiness of not taking a shower.

Men are not portrayed as unfeeling if we consider one of the oldest literature which is the Bible. Noah supplicated for the people to board his ark. Moses protected the Hebrew slave being oppressed. David cared for his fathers sheep and liked to play with his harp. Joseph took care of his brothers. The list goes on.

Michelangelo could relate to a mothers pain in his Pieta. Shakespeare regaled us with his sensitive poetry. Dickens opened our minds regarding the pity for the orphans. All these men in history were never afraid to show some feeling.

We suspect that it was the mass media that perpetuated the belief that being masculine meant not having to care. That men are supposed to have no feelings. The movies after World War II started the macho image. So what is the impact of the war? Men were portrayed as unfeeling with the likes of John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and all the other tough guys of Hollywood. It was during this time also that the era of television came about. The macho image from Hollywood films were being reverberated in television and its advertisements. The most probable reason was because the same people who produced films also produced TV and its ads.

The Hollywood phenomenon had such a great effect not only in America but also in other parts of the world. An evidence of this is the Spaghetti Westerns. Italians produced their own version of the unfeeling macho cowboy. This time the lack of emotion was enhanced because the Italians didnt really know the culture of the American frontier. They just mimicked what they saw in the Hollywood movies.

Nowadays, due to the information boom of the internet, men are getting educated about skin care.
