Two common procedures executed by a cosmetic dentist are the inlay and the onlay. In both cases, the intent is to retain the remaining segment of good tooth by installing a protective layer over it to prevent further damage. An inlay requires the removal of a layer of the tooth so that it will both bond and be a similar thickness as the original tooth. The onlay is designed to cover the entire top surface of the tooth, and requires only enough of the good tooth to be removed to create a bonding surface for the onlay.
